What do you really need this Christmas?

Update from Tim Perutz – Founder / Director AGF UK

Update from Tim Perutz – Founder / Director AGF UK

Just back from Haiti and delighted to report to all our friends that both AGF projects, our education and microfinancing projects are doing well.

The Andrew Grene High School

Now in its 7th year, the school has 253 students aged 12-19, with over 7 year groups.

Students receive a full curriculum of courses as well as a cooked meal at every lunch time.

The education is highly valued and, for many, the lunch we provide is their only reliable food source.

Under the guidance of Ricot, our wonderful headmaster and his team, the students are getting better and better exam results which is a huge testament to these kids’ determination and appreciation for the education received.

With your ongoing support, we opened a new computer lab earlier this year with 36 workstations and high-speed internet. It wasn’t an easy feat in a place without electricity or telecoms cables (the solution – solar powered PCs and a dish on the roof for internet!).

It costs just 33p a day to sponsor a child at The Andrew Grene High School

Microfinance

The building that housed our microfinance operation in Aquin was badly damaged by hurricane Matthew in Oct 2016. In June, we opened an enlarged branch in a new location in Aquin with improved facilities. Our colleagues and clients are very proud of their new home – it looks and feels like a small, but real, bank!

We have made small loans to 1,800 women in the area and provide these with a free education programs (literacy, numeracy, basic healthcare and business skills). The education is hugely valued by these women, most of whom did not have the opportunity to attend even elementary school.

It’s totally thanks for the wonderful, generous and steadfast support of friends (emotional and financial) since we began these projects in 2011 that these good things are possible. So, on behalf of all the participants of these programs in Haiti, a huge Thank You.
