On Sunday, @oliver_bureau ran the @edinburghmarathan for us. The weather was warm with little breeze and the atmosphere was filled with nervous anticipation and ralgex! Oliver completed the race, raising over £1000 for @theandrewgrenefoundation and we are all very grateful and congratulate him on his first marathon success! Here's to many more...once the blisters have disappeared 😊

Student Sponsorship

We have been running our student sponsorship program for a number of years, and currently have 86 high school students and 15 university students being supported.

The program brings joy to our sponsors, our students and their families and our team, but mostly it provides a first class education giving hope and promise to the future generation of Haitians, who can be the change that is so desperately needed.

Our students have a variety of dreams and ambitions, and our most recently sponsored student, Guyvens, explains his ambitions to his sponsor Lizzie in his letter to her, shown in the picture.

This is what Lizzie said about the sponsorship program:

"I recently decided to sponsor a student in Haiti to give them a high school education and am delighted to have received this very touching letter from him. If you can help a child like Guyvens get an education, and through them help Haiti to recover, please consider becoming a sponsor if it is within your means."

For £15 per month (the equivalent of 3 “posh” coffees), you can provide a child with a full education, all the way from the 7th grade to graduation.

Writing about Haiti can be depressing at times, bu

Writing about Haiti can be depressing at times, but I also find reason to be inspired.

One such reason is Dorothie.

Dorothie joined the Andrew Grene High School in August 2011 when our doors opened. She did not find education easy, but Dorothie was determined. She had several personal health challenges during her time at school, but she overcame them and graduated in 2018.

She was our first ever sponsored student, sponsored by Anne, a lady who came to a talk that I delivered at Trinity College Dublin. At this time, the sponsorship program was in its infancy, but Anne, mother to 4 daughters, was taken with the chance of supporting a child less fortunate than her own, and she signed up immediately.

From the outset, Dorothie was determined to secure a career in medicine. She never wavered in this desire, but things are hard in Haiti. Extremely hard. When she graduated from the AGHS she was not awarded a university scholarship, and her parents were unable to support her financially through the university system, so she took an administrative position in a local factory.

But as I say, Dorothie was determined, and never lost sight of her goal of going into a medical profession. 4 years on from leaving the AGHS, she had saved enough to put herself through nursing college and started her studies in September 2022.

Anne writes: “Sponsoring Dorothie’s education was a brilliant experience for me and my husband. We met her when we visited Haiti in 2016 and were bowled over by her warmth and good spirits. She always wanted to be part of the medical profession so it’s really great to hear that she has had the courage and determination to follow her dream.”

So, I would like to thank Anne, and all of our sponsors who enable children like Dorothie to fulfil their dreams, but mostly I would like to thank Dorothie, for being determined.

"The problems don't stop: the back to the scarcity of fuel at the pump, permanent insecurity and exponential inflation, the school keeps on brightening. All works as planned. Our students are really blessed. If it is true that they come from extremely poor families, they can rejoice in being currently privileged in terms of access and school support in Port-au-Prince.

Sharing the figures out of Haiti this week showing the number of schools now open. You will see that the total for the whole of #haiti is just 14%. We are happy to report that we had 257 students in attendance in uniform yesterday, which is remarkable and testament to the strength and resilience our teachers, students and team on the ground show each and every day. We are also happy to report that our sponsored university students have finally started/restarted their studies, and the vocational schools have also reopened.
